A lot of people come to yoga in the hopes of getting fit and attaining more flexibility, these are all great reasons to start a yoga practice. However, yoga will offer you much more then simply the ability to touch your toes.
Through a regular practice you will begin to create a stronger connection with your body, which in turn will enable a stronger connection to all the other parts of you too; mind and spirit. The wonderful thing is it’s a subtle transformation which does not subscribe you to any dogma or religious practice. However, over time you might begin to develop or want to cultivate a spiritual practice. It is not just gentle stretching either so please expect to sweat. (unless your taking my yin class). It is through the use of breath and movement that we create this transformation in the body.
You will gain:
Flexibility and strength – Its important that these two are in balance with one another. People think that you need to be flexible in order to practice yoga but this is not the case, those with flexibility usually need to work on gaining strength and vice versa.
Balance – through connecting with your core and building strong foundations you will notice that your body becomes more balanced and you are more able to deal with the everyday requirements of your life with a more equanimous state of mind.
Overall sense of Wellness - This ties in with the other two – you will obviously begin to feel fitter, perhaps you start making healthier food choices and just generally begin to feel a sense of peace and contentment. All wonderful things to feel.
